Chadd Closing In On Southmont Record

Normally I probably wouldn’t write a column of this type in the middle of the season as I don’t like to put one player above the team. But if I had a dollar for every time I was asked the following question at the Sugar Creek Classic this weekend...

The question: How close is Cam Chadd to reaching the all-time scoring record at Southmont, and where does he currently stand on the all-time list?

Chadd entered the season back in November with 1,148 points and stood at 18th on the all-time scoring list. After Saturday’s Sugar Creek Classic championship game, the senior standout moved to 11th all-time with 1,315 points, which put him just two points behind Coal Creek’s Dick Shull who ended his high school career with 1,317 points.

Chadd also is just 14 points from moving past North Montgomery’s BJ Schlicher who finished his career with 1,326 points.

So, with 14 points against Seeger this Friday night, Chadd would then sit all alone in ninth place on the all-time list. And who would be next in line? Southmont’s Travis Bowen, who currently is the school’s all-time leading scorer. Bowen ended his four-year career with 1,369 points.

Chadd is currently 55 points from setting the school’s scoring record, and he’s averaging 15.0 points a game. If he keeps that pace, he would need four games to set a new record. However, he erupted for a career-high 41 points against Seeger a year ago. Should he have a big game again when the two teams play this Friday, it could be this week, next Friday’s game against Covington, or he could break the record against Crawfordsville at home next Saturday.

It’s not a matter of if he will break the record, but rather when he will break it. I am sure Chadd would like to get it behind him so he doesn’t start having people constantly asking him about it — and columnists writing about it.

Breaking it down, though, Chadd hit for 277 points as a freshman with a high of 30 points in 20 games. As a sophomore, he raised his career total to 434 points in 23 games, and a high of 34 points. Last year, as a junior, he bettered his sophomore total by three points with 437 points, including the big night with 41 points against Seeger. He played in 22 games last season. He also had another game with 34 points.

This season he has picked up 167 points (unofficially according to my figures) including a season-high of 29 in the first game of the Sugar Creek Classic last Friday against Western Boone.

Chadd is one of an elite group at Southmont. A total of 12 players have reached the 1,000 point mark in their careers. Of that total, seven have been male and four have been female players.
