Here is a bio of the eight individuals who will be inducted into this Saturday’s Southmont Athletic Hall of Fame.
The event will begin with a tour of the facilities at 5 p.m., a catered dinner at the school’s cafeteria and the awards ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the auditorium
INDUCTEES:
Dan Booth (Class of 1973) Dan lettered two years in football and was a starting offensive and defensive end for the undefeated football team in 1971. He added two letters in basketball and two letters in baseball where he set the school strikeout record.
Kyle Boots (Class of 2001) Kyle was a three-year letter winner in wrestling and a two-time state qualifier. He was a captain his senior year when the team won the team semistate title and qualified for the state finals. He ended his career with an 85-19 record and was part of three county championship teams. He was a regional champion his junior and senior years, a Sagamore Athletic champion those same two years and was named to the Journal Review All-Area teams those years as well. He held the school record for the best record at 171 as he went 27-3.
Angie Flick Brown (Class of 1986) Angie earned a total of 11 letters in her career winning four in basketball and track and three cross country. In basketball, she was part of two sectional team championships, two conference team championships and one co-conference team championship, three Montgomery County team championships. She earned All-Conference honors in 1984 and 1986, All county team in 1984, Team Captain in 1986. She holds the record for most points in a season (374) and most field goals in a season (160). He teams went 17-5, 15-5 and 18-4 her final three years. In track, she was part of a regional team championship, two sectional team championships and three conference team championships. She earned all-conference first team 1,600M relay (1983) and her teams went 15-4, 15-0, and 13-2 her final three seasons. In cross country, she was part of three sectional team championships, two conference team championships and three county team championship. The team went 33-2 in her three seasons and she was an individual qualifier for the state meet twice (sophomore and senior years) and all-Conference as all three years.
Don Martin (Class of 1987) Don was a three-year letter winner in football and earned First Team All State for Class 2A his senior year as well. He was Lafayette All Area, Region All Star and all-conference and all- county as a junior and senior. He was voted team MVP and held school records (as of 1986) for most solo tackles in a game with 14. solo tackles in a season with 97, and 159 total tackles for a career. He played defensive end at Indiana State University for two seasons. In track he lettered four years and was part of conference team champions, county team champions,. He was also an individual for the sectional, conference and county in the shot put as a senior and a conference and county champion in the shot put as a junior. He broke the shot put school record as a junior (50-1) and broke his own record as a senior (51-10). He also letter his junior and senior year in basketball.
A.J. Melvin (Class of 1998) A.J. was al 11-letter winner earning four letters in football and baseball and three in basketball. In football he was named 1997 All-State; named 1997 All-State Class 2A as a defensive back by the IFCA; named 1997 All-State by “Hoosier Gridiron”; named 1997 All-Regional; named 1996 and 1997 All- Sectional; named 1997 Lafayette Journal & Courier Small Area Schools Running Back Award; 1997 All-Conference; 1996 and 1997 All-County; 1997 SHS Outstanding Offensive Player; 1995 and 1996 SHS Outstanding Defensive Player. As a senior, he rushed for rushed 249 yards on 11 carries with five touchdowns in the first half against Crawfordsville and did not play the second half. For his career, he finished second in rushing and scoring and ended with 50 TDs. He play running back at Franklin College for two years and played in every game. In baseball, he was part of the team which set the record for most wins in a season in 1998 when it went 22-7. That team broke 16 school records, won the sectional for the first time in 10 years, and won the school’s first baseball regional title. He set a school record with a 112 career runs scored, ranked second in career stolen bases (83 and third in most sacrifices (9). He was all-county and all-conference in 1998. He was the team’s starting point guard for three years and was all-conference as a junior and all-county as a senior.
Brittany Sayler Roth (Class of 2003) Brittany was a four-year letter winning in swimming and then added two more in volleyball. In swimming she was the 1999-2000 county champion in 1 meter diving and was the school’s first regional diving. In 2000-2001 she was the record holder in the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Freestyle Relay and was the county, conference and sectional champion in the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Freestyle Relay and was the Crawfordsville Aquatic Center record holder in both events and Indiana High School State Qualifier in the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Freestyle Relay. She was a State Finalist in the 200 Medley Relay. The team won the county, conference and sectional Titles. In 2001-2002 she was the record holder in the 100 Backstroke. She was the county, conference and sectional champion in the 100 Backstroke, 200 Freestyle Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay. She was a state qualifier in the 100 Backstroke, 200 Freestyle Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay. In 2002-03, she set records in the 100 Backstroke and was the county, conference and sectional champion in the 200 Individual Medley, 100 Backstroke, 200 Freestyle Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay. She was the state qualifiers in the 200 Individual Medley, 100 Backstroke, 200 Freestyle Relay, 400 Freestyle Relay and a state finalist in the 200 Individual Medley, 100 Backstroke. She lettered four years at Ball State in swimming where she was named the Freshmen of the year in 2003-04, named second team All Mid-American Conference as a sophomore when she led the team with 10 first places finishes and was a conference finalist in the 100 Backstroke, 200 Backstroke; Mid-American Conference Silver Medalist: 100 Backstroke; Mid-American Conference Bronze Medalist: 400 Medley. As a junior she repeated as a second team all-conference selections and was a finalist in in the 100 Backstroke, 200 Backstroke, 200 Individual Medley; Mid-American Conference Silver Medalist: 400 Medley Relay, 100 Backstroke; Mid-American Conference Bronze Medalist: 200 Backstroke. As a senior she was nominated for Mid-American Conference Senior of the Year, voted team captain and was the Ball State Team High Point Award Winner. She was a finalist in the conference meet in the 100 Backstroke, 200 Backstroke, 200 Individual Medley. She represented Ball State University at the 2006 U.S. Open in the 100 Backstroke and 200 Backstroke and was awarded She is the Interim Head Coach at the University of North Texas which broke five records and had fou4 USA Swimming National Qualifiers represented UNT in Atlanta.
Lisa Acton Sonnega (Class of 1981) Lisa earned eight varsity letter while at Southmont. In volleyball, she was all-conference and all-county twice. In basketball, she was all-conference and all-county all three years and was part of the sectional championship team in 1979. She had a career high of 29 points and averaged in double figures all three years. In track, she held the school 800 meter run record and was a member of the 4 x 400 meter relay team that owned the school record. She ran in the state meet in the 800 and 4 x 400 relay as a senior. She was all-conference all three years> She attended Indiana Central (now University of Indianapolis) and earned 12 letters, as she lettered all four years in basketball, volleyball and track. She earned a full scholaraship after her first year. She earned all-conference honors four year in track. After college, she became a professional indoor badminton player. She was on the USA Women’s National Team and participated in the U.S. Olympic Festival in San Antonio, Texas in 1993. She retired from professional badminton in 1999.
Kenyon Utterback (Class of 1997) Keynon earned a total of nine varsity letters at Southmont. In football, he was named the Outstanding Special Teams Player 1996. In basketball, he was named the Mental Attitude Award winner in 1997. In track he lettered four years and was part of sectional championship teams in 1996 and 1997, conference champs in 1996 and 1997 and county champs 1994-1997. At the 1997 State Meet he placed 11th in the 300 meter low hurdles and 15th in 110H hurdles. In 1996 at the State meet he placed 16th in 300 L and 21st in 110H. He won the sectional regional meet in 110H and 300L Hurdles 1996 and placed second in both events in 1997 at the regional. He was all-conference in the 110 high Hurdles 1996 and 1997 and was all-conference in the 300 Low Hurdles 1995, 1996 and 1997 and was all-conference in the 1600m Relay in 1997. In his junior year he was unbeaten in both high and low hurdles until the state meet. He broke the record for the 300 LH time of 38.03 in regional meet 1997. He ran track at Vincennes University for one semester.
